The Collocations of Business

 The Collocations of Business

The business world is a rather complex and fancy one. When we think of a businessman we typically think an elegant suit , expensive car and someone who makes a lot of money.

Well this this elegance is reflected in the language of business because of the specific language register of business talk ; that being formal , elegant but sometimes needlessly complex.

The collocations used in the world of business give us a quick glimpse on how people talk in this professional context and are very useful if you trying to speak English more naturally and also more elegantly.

As you can see from the provided examples that these collocations no longer just involve a specific word such as "have", "take" or "make" but make use of specific terms like "partnership", "market" "deal" , "sales" etc.

You would think that these collocations can only be used in this very specific context that we talked about , however plenty of them have a place in your regular day to day life.

For example:

  • You and your friend decided to help each other with homework and thus you "go into a partnership" or "go into an agreement
  • You decide to meet up with one of your old friends and thus you "chair a meeting" with them
  • You sell your old bike to the neighbor's son and thus you "close a deal

Knowing the usage of these collocations will help you significantly in the common conversations you have in English and also can give you an upper hand if you manage to enter the world of business.

Next lesson we will take a look at other forms of collocations and until then , take care and goodbye!
