There are many kinds of collocations used in different contexts for example : advertisement , marketing , movies and most important of all ordinary speech between two people.
Today we are going to dive into learning most common of collocations to improve your ability to sound more natural, and to improve your English skills overall.
We are going to cover the 3 most basic of word combinations and explain their role:
Take
- Take a bite
- Take a holiday
- Take a lesson
- Take a look
- Take a bow
- Take a break
- Take a call
The word "Take" is very versatile and used in many collocations and is typically used to signify the initiation of an action.
Make
- It’s easy to make a mistake.
- We can’t undertake that you will make a profit.
- My mom always makes me a sandwich to school
- We need to make an effort to do well in this competition.
The word "Make" is also a very versatile and it's typical use is to signify the creation of something (ex. make a sandwich) or the exertion of something (ex. make an effort-signifying the exertion of concentration)
Have
- Have a backache
- Have a bad fall
- Have a bad temper
- Have a chat
- Have a competition
- Have a confrontation
- Have a conversation
The word "Have" can also be used in many ways but typical it either signifies the possession or or ownership of something (ex. have a car) or the initiation of an action (ex. have an argument)
The mastering of these these types of collocations will help you greatly in improving your English speaking skills.
